Does the Suicide Squad Cast Photo Look More Like a Metal Band or a CW Show?

Those of you who were worried about the tone of Suicide Squad set by that photo of the Joker… should still be worried. David Ayer tweeted out this group shot of the cast, which doesn’t give us a lot of hope for the movie. The A.V. Club already nailed it with the yearbook jokes, but we’re split: We can’t tell if they’re supposed to be a Slayer Slipknot cover band who were too cheap to get the masks, or the alternately grinning and broody young cast of this summer’s hottest new teen dramedy?

There are too many people in this photo, and not even the ones we want to see—namely, the Joker and Amanda Waller. And why does Harley Quinn look like she just came from roller derby practice? (Which is probably where she ripped that one random spot on her shirt.) Her costume looks very “Harley Quinn off-hours,” though it’s also clearly pulled inspiration from the video game versions. Seriously, her outfit in the New 52 comics or even the Hot Topic underoos would have been a better choice.

But really, the whole cast is underwhelming. Here’s hoping they officially announce Amanda Waller (Viola Davis has been all-but-confirmed, no official word from Warner Bros yet though) and get their collective crap together. Because we want to like a superhero take on The Expendables and want it to be elevated above that quality and more on the level of The Fast and the Furious. But they’ve got to meet us halfway.

What do you think of the first look at the Suicide Squad?

I think everyone is condeming this movie based upon 2 pictures. Really? I admit I have no stake in this not having any idea who most of these characters are, but I also admit I really enjoyed John Carter even though everyone wrote that one off too based upon as little evidence before its release.

i don’t condemn this movie from these two pictures, I condemn it from the will smith picture of his dead shot costume. The wrong eye is augmented! You can’t shoot right handed with a left eye!

I’ll cut Stubby some slack since May 4 is apparently a company holiday at Tor.com. And I like this look, as I liked the Joker teaser pic (but then I barely know the first thing about Suicide Squad).

I’m not even interested in the version of this that’s an animated WB movie, or any of the comics in this vein and I am a DC fan – just barely visit this corner of the DC universe. I’m sure the movie will do fine in a low register, but doubt this will have broad appeal. If they had edited out the Daredevil series on Netflix into two movies, it also would not have broad appeal (by that, I mean 300-400 million world wide). This could be considered a success if it makes Kingsmen money (although that supposedly had a production budget south of $90 million and I’m not sure even with his recent lack of success Smith – and some of the other talent – didn’t ask for or eat up a certain part of the budget in salaries).

It’s nothing I have any interest to see in theaters (just like I had no interest to see GotG in theaters).

I’m a fan of DC heroes but not what DC is doing in comics & movies these days, for the most part. That said, Suicide Squad is one place where the obsession with mid-90s “grim n’ gritty” actually works. I could see this movie, & frankly I’m still a third convinced that the Joker will wipe the temporary tattoos off his skin in the first act, & the photo is just trolling the fans. (Also I remember everyone getting burned by hating on Ledger, & I don’t want to fall into that same trap.)

The Joker is not a *part* of the Suicide Squad. We have seen pictures of him though so he is in the movie.
